Health, Physical Education, & Safety Courses
Important Note: A Rich East physical education uniform is required.
Physical Education Fundamentals I -- R12
One Semester
Prerequisite: Freshman Standing
This course provides instruction in selected Physical Education activities. The development
of personal fitness is stressed. Among the activities included are flickerball, flag
football, track, wrestling, gymnastics, tumbling, and other physical fitness activities.
Physical Education Fundamentals I -- R14
One Semester
Prerequisite: Freshman Standing
This course provides instruction in selected Physical Education activities. The development
of personal fitness is stressed. Among the activities included are soccer, speedball,
track, Gymnastics I, volleyball, and other physical fitness activities.
Physical Education Fundamentals II -- R24/R25
Two Semesters
Prerequisite: Sophomore Standing
This is a continuation of Physical Education Fundamentals I. The emphasis is on personal
fitness. It will include such activities as flag football, flickerball, indoor floor
games, basketball, badminton, Gymnastics II, aerobics, circuit training, softball,
and other physical fitness activities.
Health Education -- T11
One Semester
Prerequisite: Freshman Standing
All students will be required to complete a semester of Health Education during their
Freshman year. It will include instruction in the means of developing and maintaining
health. Among the topics covered are exercise, nutrition, disease and first aid.
Health Education B -- T14
One Semester
Prerequisite: Intended for freshmen students identified as in need of remediation
in reading.
All students will be required to complete a semester of Health Education during their
Freshman year. It will include instruction in the means of developing and maintaining
health. Among the topics covered are exercise, nutrition, disease and first aid.
JUNIOR/SENIOR ELECTIVES:
All Junior and Senior students have the choice of two semesters per year from the
following courses. Enrollment for these courses will occur during the pre-registration
period. Those students not choosing an elective will be assigned by his/her counselor.
Please pay special attention to the prerequisites for each course.
Junior/Senior Physical Education/Team Sports -- R42/R43
One or Two Semesters
Prerequisite: Junior or Senior Standing and Completion
of Sophomore Physical Education
This course will have a major emphasis on team activities along with personal fitness.
It includes instruction in soccer, flag football, conditioning, weight training, volleyball,
badminton, pickleball, basketball, steo aerobics, softball, floor hockey, and other
physical fitness activities.
Junior/Senior Physical Education/Individual Sports - R50
One or Two Semesters
Prerequisite: Junior/Senior Standing
This course will have a major emphasis on individual activities along with personal
fitness. It includes instruction in tennis, archery, volleyball, basketball, badminton,
conditioning, circuit training, golf, and other physical fitness activities.
Junior/Senior Physical Education/Advanced Gymnastics - R58
One Semester
Prerequisite: Instructor Approval
This class will include instruction on all men and women's competition events, as
well as the floor exercise. An emphasis on personal fitness development will include
flexibility and cardio-vascular training through aerobics and running.
Junior/Senior Physical Education/Adv Conditioning and Weight Training I - R70
R71
One or Two Semesters
Prerequisite: Junior/Senior Standing
This course will include instruction in various methods of fitness training. The major
emphasis will be in strength development, flexibility, and cardio-vascular respiratory
training. An extensive circuit training and power lifting program will develop with
an aerobic running program.
Junior/Senior Physical Education/Adv Conditioning and Weight Training II - R72
R73
One or Two Semesters
Prerequisite: Instructor Approval
This is a high intensity course with emphasis on weight training for fitness and strength.
Driver Education -- T54/T55
One Semester
Prerequisite: Sophomore Standing and Legal Driving Age
This course consists of two phases - forty-five hours of classroom instruction in
driving and traffic safety and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. It is offered
as a part of the Physical Education course work during the sophomore year.
