The History and Thought

Website

History and Thought of Western Man is a two-year course at Rich East High School in Park Forest, Illinois. The course-- which was created in 1978 by David Claudon, Robert Rodey, and Frank Giannetti--covers literature, history, art, culture and philosophy of Western Civilization. The students are primarily sophomores and juniors. David Claudon taught the English and art portion of the course from 1978 to 2006. Robert Rodey (1978-1992), Ryba Epstein (1991-present), Barbara Gardner (1992-2003), and Rocco Rado (2004-present) have taught the history portion of the course.

The following webpages were the final project for the course. Instead of a history fair that had been done for many years, which consisted of visual displays, the students are required to prepare an informative research paper, at least four pages in length. At least seven sources are used and two links are required. The finished webpage has to have original color graphics.

People Who Made a Difference

In 2003, students were required to do research on individuals who influenced Western Civilization during the 20th century. To be included on this site, students had to have an A or B on their original research paper and also on their webpage.

The Modern Artists Cafe

The 2002 projects were only done by the second-year students. The centered on research regarding either modern artists or modern art movements. For this project, they had to create one artwork in the style of the artist.

Mare Nostrum

The 1999-2000 projects all deal with the world of Homer through Virgil. Pages are divided into the Greeks, Romans and Other Cultures.

The 1997-1999 Webpages

These are the earliest webpages. In 1997 students were required to have four black and white graphics. Later they had to have color graphics.
