Course Descriptions
for Spanish
Spanish I
(E60/E61)
Two Semesters
Prerequisite: English W or H Placement
Basic instruction in the skills of listening, speaking,
readingand writing Spanish. Emphasis is placed on correct
pronunciation, spelling and punctuation. During the second
semester there will be a study of areas where Spanish is spoken.
Spanish II

Two Semesters
Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Spanish I
Continued instruction in the skills of listening, speaking,
reading and writing Spanish. Emphasis is placed on refining
skills learned in Spanish I. Both the language and the culture
of the peoples of Spanish descent will be studied.
Spanish III
-- (E64/E65)
Two Semesters
Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Spanish II
Development of aural-oral skills through extensive listening
to native speakers on tape recordings and giving oral reports
in Spanish on the content. Discussion skills developed using
the contemporary play, novel, and short story as themes.
Also, emphasis is on speaking on a variety of contemporary
topics. In addition to the materials used during the first
semester, recordings of news broadcasts and video tapes in
Spanish are used.
Spanish IV
(E66/E67)
Two Semesters
Prerequisite: A Grade of A,B, or C in Spanish III
This class is the culminating course in the Spanish sequence.
Students who enroll in this class will be expected to reach
a level of proficiency which would allow them to seek advanced
placement in their freshman year of college. Students would
be proficient in aural/oral skills and the study of the literature
will be an integral part of the course.
Spanish V
(E68/E69)
One Semester
Weighted
Prerequisite: A Grade of A,B, or C in Spanish IV
Spanish V is in essence the AP Spanish course designed to
prepare the student to take the Advanced Placement Exam in
Spanish. Its goal is real communication in Spanish and is
designed for highly motivated college-bound students. Class
activities include intensive writing, reading, speaking and
listening with newspapers, magazines, audio tapes, all at
an extremely advanced level.
Independent
Study Foreign Language (E99)
One Semester
Prerequisite: Completion of all Other Levels
Before final registration, the student must obtain the approval
of an instructor on the foreign language staff under whom
the student will study. The instructor will base approval
both on an evaluation of the student's ability and of the
program of study which the student is proposing. The approved
program must be submitted to the Assistant Principal for Teaching
and Learning.
