What's the difference between a search, meta-search and directory?

Search Engine: Program that searches a database for an answer that matches a user's keyword query. Some search engines can retrieve very specific information.

Meta Search Engine: A service program that searches many individual search engines and then combines the most relevant results. The information retrieved is more general than specific.

Subject Directory: A collection of web page records classified by subject to enable easy browsing of the collection.
