Even now, severe oppression and discrimination occur. A prime example would be the Roma Gypsies who are being persecuted all over the world, especially in Eastern Europe. Many Roma are harassed and even savagely attacked. Says Yulia, a Roma, "I can’t go into the city and feel comfortable. As soon as they see a Gypsy coming, they begin to say hateful things about us." (qtd. in Giles) Arayici wrote, "They rejected the name Gypsies as this was imposed from the outside, and chose the name Rom, which is the designation by the United Nations (UNESCO, 1984)."
